Sneezy the Snowman!

The past couple of days we've been enjoying activities about "Sneezy the Snowman" from Deanna Jump's unit.  You can get her unit here!   Sneezy is a little snowman who has a cold and wants to be warm.  He tries several things to warm himself up, but each time he melts.

First, let me say I'm super proud of how well these little people are writing in kindergarten.  It's amazing!  Especially when you think about many of them didn't know any of their letters and sounds when the year started.  And, their illustrations are fantastic!!  Wow!

Below are 3 examples of things Sneezy did to warm up!  Yikes!

"A snowman should not sit by the fire, because he will melt."
"A snowman should not drink hot cocoa, because he will melt."
"A snowman should not sit in a hot tub, because he will melt."

Below are couple of examples of times your child helped someone out.  I love how they really thought about how they help someone in need!

"I help my mommy cook when she needs help.  When I help her she helps me.  She like it."
"When somebody falls down I help them get up. Then they like it.  When I falls down I hope somebody will help me up."
"Because I make her happy.  I be helpful for her when I pick up her room with her."

Next, I asked the boys/girls to draw and label the 3 things Sneezy did that were not good choices and tell what happened as a result.  Below you will find their thoughts!  Enjoy!
"Down, down, down, down, down, he melted down.  Eek!"
 "He melted."
 "He melted all gone!"
"Make me brand new." "He melted."

How cute are these?!!

Snow Guys and Gals!!

Today we finished up our snow guys and gals.  They really are adorable!  In the Art Center last week and this week the little people worked on their giant torn paper snowballs.  Today we finished them up by adding carrot noses, eyes, mouths and scarves.  Their creations turned out just precious!!  These little people rock!!  Gotta love 'em!

"How to Build a Snowman"

The little people and I have been learning all about snowmen this week.  Monday we brainstormed a list of things you would need to build a snowman and read several exciting books!  One of our favorites was "Snowmen at Night" by Caralyn Buehner.  Today was read another book by Ms. Buehner on the Smartboard called "Snowmen all Year".  They are super excited about her latest book "Snowmen at Work" which we're going to read tomorrow.  Hidden within the illustrations of the books are other little pictures.  It was a lot of fun looking for the hidden pictures today on the Smartboard.

Sequencing is one of the goals on our report card in kindergarten.  So, for writing yesterday and today the little people wrote steps for building a snowman.  They are doing an excellent job stretching out their words or using their resources within the classroom to find words they might need in their writing.  Here are a couple of their pieces! By the way, these are from my "Snowmen at Work" unit on TPT.

(First, roll three snowball. And mittens, eyes and broom.  Next, I will give him a scarf, and hot cocoa and some boots.  Then, a snowflake pipe.  Last, the snow falls down on me.)
(First, you roll three snowballs.  Next, I will give him a carrot.
Then, we need to get eyes.  Last, get a mouth.)
(First, roll three snowballs.  Next, put a carrot nose on him.
Then, put on buttons.  Last, give him arms.)

Snowmen (with a little Questioning and Inferring)!!

Questioning and Inferring!  Two wonderful comprehension strategies we've been working on in kindergarten this year.  Last Thursday we started our Snowman Unit.  To begin I had the little people ask me "20 Questions" about what was inside my mystery box.  Each question could only be answered with either a "yes" or a "no".  They asked some excellent questions and gained evidence about what was inside of my box.  After they asked me their questions they recorded 4 pieces of evidence they knew about the mysterious item.  Their final task was to draw a conclusion or inference about what they thought was inside the mystery box.  I thought I'd share 3 examples with you.  It's funny they were all able to figure out the mystery.  Such good question askers!!

Yikes!

It's back to school tomorrow!  I spent the better part of today trying to prepare myself and my classroom for the return of the little people.  One of my littles got a new puppy for Christmas, so he or she is coming first thing in the morning to visit!  Yeah!  I love puppies, especially when I don't have to get up in the middle of the night with them.

We will be starting our "Snowmen at Work" literacy and math unit tomorrow as well.  I am super exciting about sharing this unit with the little people.  We're going to begin with "20 Questions" with my mystery item being a snowman of course and then moving on from there.  I promise I will post a few pictures along the way.

I'm also thinking about getting a new camera.  Huge step for me!  Maybe a Canon EOS Rebel.  However, I have no idea and would appreciate any suggestions. My daughter is getting married this summer and I'd like something a little fancier than a point and shoot to take some family photos.

Finally, below you will find a couple of new or updated units I have on TPT.  Just click the links to hop on over to my store.

Brand new!!  Yeah for snow!!  So pumped about this one!!

 Newly updated "Exploring Penguins".
